Isle of Man TT 2013 – Sidecar TT Race 2 Report – Brilliant Birchall Brothers Take Maiden TT Win

Blue skies and warm temperatures greeted the sidecar teams as they prepared for the second sidecar TT race of TT 2013. Starting at number 1 and first off was Dave Molyneux & Patrick Farrance. As the sidecar crews reached Glen Helen on lap 1 it was the Birchall brothers Ben & Tom who took a early lead by 2 seconds over Tim Reeves with Conrad Harrison occupying third place ahead of Dave Molyneux, whilst John Holden was fifth after Glen Helen on lap 1.

By Ramsey on lap 1 the Birchall’s lead at the front increased to over 5 seconds over Tim Reeves, Conrad Harrison maintained third place and was only 1.3 seconds behind Tim Reeves in second place. Dave Molyneux still held fourth place, John Holden stayed in fifth place whilst Dougie Wright and Gary Bryan battled it out for sixth place.

As lap 1 ended Ben & Tom Birchall lead by over 10 seconds on the team Cofain racing sidecar outfit, Tim Reeves held onto second place, Conrad Harrison was now down to third place as Dave Molyneux moved into third place at the end of lap 1.

Lap 2 began with the Birchall brothers further increasing their lead over Tim Reeves and Dan Sayle to now 11 seconds, Dave Molyneux remained in third place and was now reeling Reeves and Sayle for second place. Conrad Harrison, John Holden and Dougie Wright completed the top 6 at Glen Helen on lap 2.

At Ballaugh Bridge, Ben and Tom Birchall’s lead at the front was now over 15 seconds, Dave Molyneux had moved into second place ahead of Tim Reeves who was soon forced to retire when mechanical issues hit the SMT racing backed sidecar outfit.

Tim Reeves retirement meant Conrad Harrison was now into third place with John Holden promoted into fourth place, whilst Dougie Wright and Gary Bryan where now into fifth and sixth positions. Franck Lelias was going well holding seventh place just in front of Gary Knight & Dan Knight who held eighth place.

So the Birchall brothers headed over the mountain on lap 2 with now a 20 second lead over Dave Molyneux, Conrad Harrison still occupied third place whilst John Holden rounded out the top 4.

As lap 2 came to a close Ben & Tom Birchall lead by 16 seconds over Dave Molyneux who had taken a little bit of time off the Birchall brothers as he chased down another sidecar TT victory. Conrad Harrison, John Holden, Dougie Wright and Gary Bryan rounded out the top 6 as the race went onto its final lap.

Lap 3 and the final lap of this years sidecar TT race 2 began with the Birchall brothers maintaining their lead out front over Dave Molyneux. Positions remained unchanged when the Birchall’s and Dave Molyneux reached Glen Helen on lap 3. Conrad Harrison and John Holden remained in third and fourth places but soon Dougie Wright was out which meant Gary Bryan was into fifth place, plus Franck Lelias and Gary Knight had moved into sixth and seventh positions.

At Ramsey postions in the top 10 in the race remained unchanged and as lap 3 went on it was clear that even Dave Molyneux couldn’t match the Birchall brothers pace today.

The Birchall brothers crossed the line to take a well deserved first sidecar TT win. Dave Molyneux and Patrick Farrance finished in second place, Conrad Harrison completed the podium finishers by taking third place on the Printing roller services backed sidecar outfit. John Holden, Gary Bryan, Gary Knight, Franck Lelias, Wayne Lockey, Dean Banks and Mick Donovan completed the top 10.

So a second new TT winner at this years Isle of Man TT, the Birchall brothers who had already being the reigning sidecar champions at the Southern 100 and had won the world sidecar championship previously where now alongside these great achievements sidecar TT winners.
