Garry Thompson is the clerk of the course at the Isle of Man TT. Garry has being clerk of the course at the TT since 2012 where Garry had to make some difficult decisions regarding racing. Most notably this was the cancellation of the senior TT last year Gary said it was one of the biggest decisions he has had to make and that to cancel the senior TT was a easy decision given the conditions around the TT course.
I asked Garry regarding this years TT if he felt the entry was better overall this year than last year. Garry said it definitely is, entries are up in the superbike, supersport, superstock, lightweight and in the sidecar TT races. The Isle of Man TT is now in a far better position as an event than it was say ten years ago and this is a view that Garry agrees with and that the TT brand is going worldwide.
Garry said about the weather on Monday’s night’s practice that it was a case of competitors getting time on the supersport and superstock bikes in what was a un-timed practice session on Monday night. Tuesday’s nights practice had to be called off due to bad weather all round the TT course, Wednesday’s nights practice was curtailed as well due to the weather but on the bright side the weather is set to pick up for Thursday and Friday’s nights practice sessions.
Its a tough job being clerk of the course at the Isle of Man TT but Garry Thompson does a fantastic job dealing for instance with when the weather goes bad during this weeks practice sessions and a decision has to be made regarding practice sessions. Finally a big thank you to Garry for taking time out of his busy schedule to talk to me about what’s it like to be clerk of the course at the Isle of Man TT.
