TT 2016 – Friday Practice Wrap Up

Superstock:

Spectators, pure road racing fans witnessed tonight a moment of sporting history, as Ian Hutchinson unofficially broke the existing TT lap record.

Piloting the superstock Tyco BMW, Hutchy lapped at an astonishing 132.803 mph! a simply stunning lap from the 11 times TT winner.

Six years ago when he sustained a career threatening leg injury at Silverstone, no one could have predicted the quite remarkable comeback from the pure road racing legend.

Without a doubt in my opinion, he’s riding better now than his five wins in a week at TT 2010, what will race week bring for the Tyco BMW rider, another five in a week?

Second fastest in tonight’s quite momentous superstock practice session, was Michael Dunlop, lapping at 131.879 mph on his own teams S1000RR BMW.

Michael on his flying lap on the stocker, was on course for a while for a 133 mph lap, before encountering traffic.

Behind the flying BMW Motorrad duo of Hutchinson and Dunlop, was Silicone Engineering Racing’s Dean Harrison 128.947 mph, he was followed by Lee Johnston 128.607 mph, John McGuinness 128.092 mph, Peter Hickman 127.972 mph.

Horst Saiger 126.730 produced a huge personal best lap whilst Phil Crowe recorded a highly notable lap speed of 122.391 mph, also impressing was Marco Pagani 122.792 mph, Ben Wylie 124.882 mph BB3 Bimota, John Ingram 124.816 mph and Shaun Anderson 124.368 mph.

Jochem Van Den Hoek of Performance Racing Achterhoek, once again finished the leading newcomer, nearing the 120 mph mark, lapping at 121.060 mph.

Supersport:

Competition on the supersport 600’s heated up tonight at TT 2016, as Dean Harrison lapped at 126.249 mph on the Silicone Engineering Racing ZX6R Kawasaki, to well and truly lay a marker down ahead of the Monster Energy supersport races.

Conor Cummins gelling quickly with the Valvoline Racing by Padgetts Motorcycles CBR 600 Honda, finished second quickest, with lap speed of 124.353 mph.

John McGuinness, Jackson Racing CBR 600 Honda, was next up lapping at 123.863 mph, following the 23 times TT winner was Peter Hickman 123.402 mph, on the Trooper backed ZX6R Kawasaki.

William Dunlop on his own teams YZF R6 Yamaha, lead the Yamaha challenge, Dan Hegarty 122.305 mph and Derek McGee 121.856 both impressed hugely.

Colin Stephenson 121.22 mph, Michal Dokoupil 121.053 mph, James Cowton 120.972 mph, completed the top ten in practice.

Whilst Sweden’s Bjorn Gunnarsson 120.794 mph, Robert Wilson 120.523 mph, Ian Pattinson 119.480 mph and Dan Cooper battling the pain barrier 119.404 mph, all enjoyed a productive practice session.

Sidecar:

John Holden/Andrew Winkle became the first sidecar duo at TT 2016, to lap in excess of 115 mph.

Lapping at 115.349 mph in the Silicone Engineering Racing/Barnes Racing Honda powered outfit, the experienced pairing where in great form.

Same notion applies to the Birchall brothers Ben and Tom, who lapped at 114.657 mph in the IEG (International Energy Group) backed outfit. It’s fair to say it’s been a tricky practice week at times for the three time TT winners.

With the opening Sure sidecar race, set to get under way tomorrow, they are gradually beginning to showcase the form that took them to successive victories at TT 2015.

Ian Bell/Carl Bell 113.206 mph, further underlined there status as potential podium finishers, the Yokohama treaded duo, are quietly confident of a stand out result or two.

Dave Molyneux/Dan Sayle 112.915 mph, fourth fastest, will start for many tomorrow, the pre race favourites, but in my opinion it’s going to be a tough ask for the all star Manx duo, to stand on the top step of the podium.

Peter Founds/Jevan Walmsley 112.184 mph are dark horses for podium finishes, same applies to Alan Founds/Aki Aalto 110.209 mph.

Matt Dix/Shaun Parker 109.506 mph, Wayne Lockey/Mark Sayers 108.531 mph, Carl Cox Motorsport’s Colin Buckley/Robbie Shorter and Gordon Shand/Phil Hyde 107.091 mph, all go into race week in good form.
