Previously won by 1990 Formula 1/Senior TT winner, seven times World Champion Carl Fogarty MBE, three times TT winner, Armoy Road Races lap-record holder Davey Todd, the legendary Robert Dunlop, ten times TT Champion Ian Lougher, the Aberdare Park Welsh Open title, remains an important milestone victory in road racing circles.
Following yesterday’s six-lap re-started first leg, Ryan Dixon was in pole position for retaining the Welsh Open crown.
First into Gordons, Fountain, Buckley’s Bends on lap one, Dixon piloting the nimble, firm sounding Trickbits Racing Moto 2 Triumph, had anticipated close company in the form of new outright Aberdare lap-record holder, Andy Smart.
The front running duo by lap two, had charged away from the chasing group of Justin Collins, William Holland and Will Burchell.
As the laps ticked down, Dixon continued to lead with Smart second, ready for any mistake, error from his fellow compatriot.
He pounced on lap seven, slotting into first, after Dixon encountered, technical gremlins.
From here, VRS Racing’s Smart had a trouble-free run to GSS Ltd Welsh Open Final Race Two glory and overall category triumph over the weekend’s races.
RWEC Ltd Racing’s Will Burchell, who plans to return next month to IOM shores for the Manx Grand Prix, bested William Holland (P3), Justin Collins (P4) for second, after fair tussles between the trio in the race for final podium spots.
The unfortunate Dixon finished fifth, Mike Knorr, Daniel Nelmes were sixth, seventh, respectively.
Niki Williams (P8), Lewis Jones (P9), Adam Raynor (P10) wrapped up the top ten with William Scott Walls (P11), Max Taylor (P12), Aaron Matthews (P13) the remaining race finishers.
