Mullingar’s Derek McGee enjoyed a quite sensational return this afternoon to 1000cc roads action, sealing in impressive fashion pole position for tomorrow’s Open, Grand Final races.
McGee who’s been ruled out of the Kells, Enniskillen, Skerries meets due to injuries sustained from an incident during practice week at TT 2019, showed no signs today of competitive rustiness at Walderstown.
Recording a fastest lap time of 1 minute 07.964 seconds, Noel Doyne supported McGee finished 0.240 quicker than respected rival, Irish Road Race Superbike Championship leader, BE Racing In Conjunction With Richardson Kelly Racing’s Derek Sheils.
Sheils (1.08.204) who was in formidable form a week ago at Skerries, in turn finished 0.7 clear of the ever improving Thomas Maxwell (1.08.904).
Fresh from a Southern 100 tenure that yielded three rostrum finishes, Martin Jones Racing’s Michael Sweeney (1.09.041) was a very creditable fourth quickest.
Whilst rising stars 2018 Junior Manx GP winner James Chawke (1.09.423) and Post TT Supersport winner Michael Browne (1.11.765), also showed an accomplished turn of speed.
Wrapping the top ten from an intriguing, captivating premier class qualifying session were Derek Wilson (1.12.920), Ballymoney’s Darryl Tweed (1.13.121), Dave Butler (1.13.971) and Damian Horan (1.14.233).
