Originally hoped to return this year (reported 3rd March), the South West Road Racing Club have announced their intention to bring back the Athea Road Races for next year’s Irish road racing season.
Thanks to making the decision to commit insurance payment (fifty percent deposit) to Motorcycling Ireland (as stipulated from the latest general meeting), it is looking much brighter for Athea’s comeback.
First held in 2002, the most recent Athea Road Races edition in 2011, attracted a top draw entry list.
TT wins record holder Michael Dunlop, the late great William Dunlop shared the Open, Supersport, Grand Final victories.
Future Duke Road Race Rankings Champion Derek McGee clinched Senior Support category spoils whilst added race winners included BE/RK Racing Team Principal John Burrows (Super Twins), Andy Farrell (Supersport 400) and Freddie Stewart (Classic 500).
News Reaction:
South West Road Racing Club Chairman, Michael Dalton:
“I thank our members for their patience in this. It has been a long road, but there is finally a lot of positivity.
We ran several fundraisers last year and, because of that support, we’re in-a-position to move forward.
This is the first step. There is a lot of work to do to get the event off the ground, but we are committed to it and look forward to getting stuck in in the new year.”
