FonaCAB Ulster Grand Prix: Imperious Hickman Dominates Superbike Q1

Illustrating again why he is so widely tipped to enhance this week his International Road Race wins tally, that presently stands at 14, Smiths Racing’s Peter Hickman proved the dominant force within the opening Superbike qualifying session of this year’s FonaCAB Ulster Grand Prix.

Lapping just over the 131 mph lap mark, Hickman registered prior to wet weather entering the horizon, a quickest lap time of 3 minutes 23.022 seconds.

4.763 seconds down on the five times TT winner’s lap time was Milenco by Padgetts Conor Cummins (3.27.785), who like Hickman set his best time before inclement weather set in around the Dundrod course.

Steadily improving his pace, Penz 13 BMW’s Davey Todd (3.28.631) impressed in finishing third quickest in front of established International roads luminaries Lee Johnston (3.29.145) and Dunlop Senior TT champion Dean Harrison (3.29.157).

Recently crowned Irish Road Race Superbike Champion Derek Sheils (3.29.680) placed sixth quickest, whilst seventh fastest Dafabet Devitt Racing’s Paul Jordan (3.30.108) also showed an accomplished turn of pace.

As at Armoy going through and some the pain barrier, Tyco BMW’s Michael Dunlop (3.30.340) latest UGP tenure began by finishing a creditable eighth fastest.

Concluding the ten quickest competitors from the opening timed Superbike qualifying session, which was red flagged with nine minutes to go of the session still run, due to increasing rain, were Honda Racing’s David Johnson (3.32.526) and PreZ Racing’s in form Jamie Coward (3.33.693).
