East Coast Racing Festival: Race Day Wrap Up

Outside of Derek McGee becoming 2018 Irish Road Race Supersport champion, plus Michael Sweeney and Derek Sheils Supersport Race 2, Super Twins, Open, Grand Final race successes, without a doubt the main highlight of race day for thousands at the Mrs Browns Boys East Coast Racing Festival, arose in the 125/Moto 3 encounter.

A compelling race which saw a classic battle for class honours between Gary Dunlop and cousin Paul Robinson, ultimately saw former North West 200 125 victor Robinson end his prodigious roads career in style, securing a hard fought race win which proved more than enough for him to become 2018 Irish Road Race 125/Moto 3 champion.

Looking back on the rest of yesterday’s race action, others to claim championship crowns in victorious fashion included Ultra Lightweight Manx GP winner Darryl Tweed plus Barry Davidson who wrapped up the Junior 350, Senior 500 Classic titles.

Drama a plenty arose in the Junior Support race, which saw long term race leader Liam Chawke crash out on the sixth and final lap, which allowed Brian Loughlin to scoop class spoils in front of newly crowned class champion Barry Sheehan.

Rathkeale’s Chawke prior to his misfortune in mid afternoon’s Junior Support encounter, was victorious within the Senior Support race, which saw second place finisher Wayne Sheehan, join brother Barry in becoming an Irish road race champion.

Remaining class winners from Sunday’s truly exhilarating day of competitive action, were Davy Morgan (250), Brian Mateer (Junior 250 Classics) and Philip Shaw (Senior 1000 Classics).

Skerries Michael Sweeney courtesy of the aforementioned Supersport, Super Twins victories, plus accumulating in total five podium finishes from five race starts, was a more than worthy recipient of the man of the meeting award.

In summing up this years Mrs Browns Boys East Coast Racing Festival, it was good for everyone involved in road racing to see the 2018 Irish roads season end in positive fashion.
