69th Scarborough Gold Cup: Rising Star Hind Springs Supersport Qualifying Surprise

With dry conditions all around allied to an extremely competitive entry, the stage was set for a thrilling battle for Supersport qualifying spoils on day one of the 69th Scarborough Gold Cup meeting.

The opening Supersport qualifying stint for even numbered competitors saw Ashcourt Racing’s Lee Johnston edge out good friend Dean Harrison, thanks to a sub 1.48.8 second lap time.

88 times Oliver’s Mount winner Harrison second quickest, was only 0.073 in arrears and was already looking at home aboard his new steed for the weekend, the Dafabet Devitt Racing Kawasaki.

Supersport odd numbers first qualifying wise, DC Racing’s Mike Norbury almost dipped under the 1 minute 49 seconds barrier, on route to setting the pace in front of Peoples Bike Team supported Joe Akroyd.

Onto the second timed practice sessions and whilst even numbers Q2 proved relatively calm in terms of drama it wasn’t the case and some for the final qualifying outing for odd numbered racers.

With just seconds of the session remaining, group pace setter Jim Hind looked set for an overall top five qualifying position before a remarkable last gasp performance, lapping at 1 minute 48.677 seconds, a huge new PB lap time, saw the Lightweight Manx GP lap record holder grab overall pole position by just 0.112 of a second over pre race favourite Johnston.

Outright Scarborough lap record holder Harrison, reigning Gold Cup runner up Norbury, Cowton Racing’s Dominic Herbertson, lead Triumph runner Akroyd complete the combined six quickest middleweight class competitors behind the ultra impressive Hind.
