69th Scarborough Gold Cup: Qualifying Wrap Up

Alongside securing a last gasp overall Supersport qualifying victory, Team ILR with Mark Coverdale’s James Hind also reigned supreme within the Super Twins, 2&4 stroke classes.

650 twins wise, Hind got the better of pre weekend favourite, first qualifying pace setter Jamie Coward, thanks to an impressive 1 minute 51.355 seconds lap time set during the originally red flagged Q2.

His growing midas touch around Scarborough was also apparent from the opening 2&4 Strokes qualifying session, with an almost sub 1 minute 55 seconds lap set.

Hind’s pace aboard the Dennis Trollope Racing TZ 250 Yamaha from 2&4 Strokes first timed practice, was so potent that despite not taking part in Q2, he still took overall timed practice honours by 0.761 over Oliver’s Mount returnee Joe Thompson.

Scarborough racing maestro Dean Harrison turned on the style in Classic Superbike qualifying, taking pole position by almost five seconds over nearest pursuer Dave Bell.

Harrison’s times sheet topping lap time of 1 minute 48.573 seconds, stands as currently the fastest lap of this year’s Gold Cup meeting.

One of the main highlights for me and I’m sure 100’s of spectators about competition this weekend, was the return of Sidecars to Oliver’s Mount.

Favourites for many to scoop on Saturday, Sunday all Sidecar race victories, Lee Crawford/Scott Hardie proved the three wheel racing insiders right by dominating qualifying.

Team A.R.C’s Crawford/Hardie didn’t have it all plain sailing though, with a pretty major front forks issue largely curtailing their first qualifying session action.

Ultimately though a best lap time set during Q2 of 1 minute 55.774 seconds placed them over three seconds clear of nearest challengers Conrad Harrison/Mike Aylott.

The Ramsden’s Steve & Matty took third on the overall times sheet whilst high profile debutants, ten times TT winners Ben Birchall/Tom Birchall were absent from the qualifying sessions.

Prior to qualifying, the Birchall’s had impressed during the first free practice session, finishing second quickest.
