2026 Classic TT Chat: ‘Davo’ David Johnson

“Got some good bikes and hopefully get some good results.”

‘Davo’ David Johnson, the 2019 yesteryear Superbike race winner, is confident of contending for top calibre Classic TT finishes.

Chatting about his F1 Superbike mount for this afternoon’s three-lap race, the Steadplan Racing ZXR 750 Kawasaki, the Adelaide speedster whose Historic Senior Classic tackle is all the way from New Zealand, the Hercock (Richard) Racing NZ Manx Norton, said:

“Not the latest of the ZXR’s as the 96 I think, it’s the one before that but still a good bike, looking forward to getting on it and thanks to Steadplan and Alasdair Cowan is the engine builder and Colin my guy that’s crew chief for me he is a legend.

He owns most of the bike and Jim from Steadplan, he’s got loads of other bikes as well. He’s doing a good job; glad he’s got me on board.”

Seventh in this year’s Senior TT, Johnson, third within the Superstock TT encounter of 2019, considered his thirteenth TT campaign as mixed.

“Up and down, didn’t have much fun on the little bikes, tried my best, first Superbike race broke down, was not in a bad position and then the Superstock races got cancelled, that was going to be our best opportunity for a decent result.

The Senior was not too bad, changed things up a lot, ended up seventh after one lap, which was unusual because usually I don’t start very well, so I’m glad we changed the bike which made it better and easier to be up there.

But it was boding well for the race, I think to have a good end to it because I always end stronger than I start but not too bad, mediocre I would say to cut a long story short.”

Weighing up 2027 international road racing options, ‘Davo’ said:

“Want to be on something that can win!”

“Keep talking, see where we end up.”

Post Classic TT action, a return to Macau is in the plans for one of Australia’s 21st century roads scene greats.

“Just working all the final details out now, looks like I’ll be there which I was not sure I would be because it’s all changed a bit.

It’s a long way to go for three sessions, you get one practice, one qualifying, one race.”
