2024 Manx GP Chat: The Adaptable Barry Furber

2024 Manx GP Chat: The Adaptable Barry Furber

Accomplished on Super Twin, Supersport, Superstock, Classic SBK tackle, Bishop Castle’s Barry Furber adapts competently to differing kinds of two wheeling machines.

Newcomers B race runner-up in 2014, Baz’s current Manx GP expedition sees him focusing solely on Classic Superbike action, astride a DC (Darryl Connolly) Auto Repairs Newtown Ltd backed GSX-R 750 Suzuki.

Going into detail about his yesteryear SBK vault, Furber 19th quickest from 2024 MGP qualifying week, said:

“I didn’t have a very good year on it last year, we got the bike perfect, Gary (Gittins) built the engine for me, got it perfect, then in the race we got a bit of fuel starvation so it wouldn’t take full throttle, riding around at about 80 percent throttle.

So, If I can have a good year on it, good finish, get everything I can out of it, I’ll park it in the corner, then I’ll retire the bike, that’s my plan anyway.”

Discussing TT 2024, which yielded three top-twenty-five finishes, including a potent push to tenth in the second Super Twins race, he stated:

“TT was good we had some good results, but it was a hard week, it really was.

The weather, the delays and then I hate having races cut short, three races run on Senior day, it’s a bit of a disappointment to do that, it’s nice to do a six-lap Senior, four-lap Twin and they suit me better those type of races.

We didn’t have massive bike issues, had a new Fireblade (Honda) which I hadn’t sat on till we got here, so there was bound to be little issues with that which we ironed out through the week, and I felt happy on it.

Didn’t go particularly fast but mainly because we didn’t get the laps but can’t complain had a good year.”

Set to return next month to Scarborough for the Steve Henshaw Gold Cup, Furber additionally confirmed that for next season, he’s sticking with Fireblade Honda machinery.

“We can be a bit more prepared next year, take it to Spain over the winter, it was a pretty well a stock bike on standard electronics and everything, didn’t like that around here, need to get kit wiring loom and kit ECU, which is about 7,000 pounds or something silly!”
