Southern 100 – latest news

Wednesday evening saw racing commence once again on the billown based circuit in the 1000 superbike race. As from the previous evenings racing it was a straight battle between Michael Dunlop and Guy Martin. Throughout the race their was no more than 1 second between them and by lap 4 they where over 8 and a bit seconds clear of Martins team mate at Tyco Suzuki by TAS Conor Cummins who was closely followed by Ian Lougher on the ILR Kawasaki superbike. The two fastest newcomers so far of race week at the Southern 100 Dean Harrison and Jamie Hamilton where both closely matched in fighting over 5th and 6th place positions.

By lap 6 the lap speeds for the leaders where now at lap record speed. Both Michael Dunlop and Guy Martin went over 113 mph for an average lap both breaking the existing lap record with Dunlops lap being slightly faster than Martins as he began to edge clear of him at the front. By lap 8 Dunlop took a comfortable win over Martin. It was Michael Dunlops third win this season on his new Honda Fireblade superbike. 3rd was Conor Cummins 3 seconds in front of Ian Lougher with Dean Harrison edging out Jamie Hamilton into 6th place. 7th was Lee Vernon on his BMW sr1000 superstock bike with Michael Pearson taking 8th place.
