Southern 100 2014 – Senior Race Report

Perfect conditions all round saw the 2014 Southern 100 senior race get off to a frantic start with Dan Kneen hitting the front on Cookstown Burrows engineering racing GSX-R 1000 Suzuki, Dean Harrison was second, Guy Martin held third place whilst Ivan Lintin, Michael Dunlop and Russ Mountford where all closely matched.

By the end of opening lap Kneen had a 0.365 second lead over Harrison whilst Guy Martin was a early retirement on Tyco Suzuki by TAS superbike.

Onto lap 2 and at Cross four ways Dean Harrison hit the front with Dan Kneen now in second place not to far behind, Michael Dunlop held third place but was over three seconds back whilst Ivan Lintin was producing a top ride on Taylor Lindsey racing CBR 1000 Honda Fireblade holding fourth position.

As Harrison crossed the line at end of lap four the RC Express racing Kawasaki rider had a 0.36 second lead over Kneen with Dunlop back in third place on BMW Hawk racing superbike.

Laps three and four saw positions out front remain largely the same although Dean Harrison’s lead was now over 1.5 second. Michael Dunlop was beginning to steadily reel in Dan Kneen for second place but Cookstown Burrows engineering racing rider Dan was keeping a decent advantage over the 11 time TT winner.

Lap five beckoned and Harrison’s grew further over Kneen, a advantage of over 2.7 seconds was acquired as Michael Dunlop continued to gradually close in on for second place.

Penultimate lap would see Harrison, Kneen and Dunlop stay in same positions as a great battle between James Cowton and Russ Mountford for fifth place had everyone entertained around Billown.

With a 4.6 second lead over Dan Kneen in second place Dean Harrison entered the final lap knowing that back to back wins at 2014 Southern 100 was looming.

As in opening 600/1000 race the rider competing on RC Express racing ZX10 Kawasaki held his nerve in superb fashion and by the end of lap seven Deano secured race victory by 6.2 seconds over Dan Kneen who just held off Michael Dunlop for second position by 0.050 of a second.

Ivan Lintin was a brilliant fourth for Taylor Lindsey racing whilst Russ Mountford won his fine battle with James Cowton for fifth place who completed the top six.

Seamus Elliott enjoyed a highly productive race finishing in seventh position as Ryan Kneen, Mark Parrett and Mark Goodings finalised the top ten.

Another top race at the friendly races and one that brought Dean Harrison his fifth Southern 100 victory and no doubt as well that theres many more to come.
