Southern 100 2014 – 600/1000 Race 1 Report

In fine conditions all round the opening 600/1000 race at 2014 Southern 100 began. Gaining the lead at Cross four ways was Guy Martin holding a tiny advantage over Dean Harrison, Russ Mountford was third in front of Dan Kneen and Michael Dunlop completing the top five.

By the end of lap 1 Dean Harrison had hit the front with Guy Martin now back in second place not to far behind on Tyco Suzuki by TAS superbike. Russ Mountford, Dan and Michael Dunlop where all closely matched battling for third place as lap two beckoned.

Harrison’s lead out front over Martin grew by the time both made Castletown corner on lap two, at the line Harrison had a lead of over two seconds over Martin with Dunlop slotting into third place on BMW Hawk racing superbike.

Laps 3 and 4 saw positions out front remain largely the same but Dean Harrison’s lead got bigger and bigger, with now a four second advantage at end of lap four the RC Express racing Kawasaki rider was producing the same eye catching form he had shown at TT 2014.

Guy Martin was maintaining second place but was being steadily reeled in by Michael Dunlop. Dan Kneen held fourth place with Russ Mountford and Ivan Lintin not far behind as we entered lap five.

Dean Harrison on RC Express racing ZX10 Kawasaki was consistently pulling away from nearest pursuer Guy Martin as he built his lead up front to nearly five seconds by the end of lap five.

Dean set a lap speed of over 113.1 mph on lap five, Michael Dunlop would set quickest lap of the race on same lap with lap speed of 113.157 mph.

Going into final lap of the race with a 5.2 second lead Harrison produced a highly accomplished and ice cool final lap to secure a well deserved opening 600/1000 race victory.

Guy Martin held off Michael Dunlop to take finish in second place whilst Dan Kneen secured fourth position on Cookstown Burrows engineering racing GSX-R 1000 Suzuki.

Russ Mountford was a good fifth for Silicone engineering racing whilst Ivan Lintin finished in a hard earned sixth position following a battling performance throughout.

Leading supersport 600 rider home was Conor Cummins recording a top ten finish overall on Jackson racing CBR 600 Honda with quickest lap speed of 108.201 mph.

Second supersport 600 mounted rider home was Malachi Mitchell Thomas in 15th position, a top performance from Malachi competing in his first pure road race. Roy Richardson completed the podium finishers on Barnes racing R6 Yamaha.

A thoroughly entertaining race to begin this years Southern 100 at Billown. Dean Harrison’s race victory is his first big bike win at the friendly races, another top achievement from the 2014 lightweight TT race winner.
