Street racing New Zealand style commenced for the first time this year, as the Burt Munro Challenge incorporated Star Insurance NZ Hill Climb Championships took centre stage.
Based in Bluff, the annual hill-climb like the Gladstone located Cliffhanger time trial, has more than a touch of a pure road racing vibe about it, given the smooth, flowing roads, specific riding style required to be ultra-competitive.
After today’s timed action impacted by unfortunate incidents (Road Racing News wishes those involved a very speedy recovery), the rider taking home the overall fastest racer spoils was none other than NZ street racing legend Tony Rees.
Rees racing under the Team Rees banner, registered a best time of 45.705 seconds, which was just over 0.4 quicker than top Open class pursuer, 54 plate holder Jonny Lewis.
Leading Pre 89 Classics exponent Jordan Burley took third whilst overall placings fourth to tenth, were occupied by the following:
Up to 600cc machinery pace setter Andrew Rudd, Roger Bland, Damian Perriton, Duncan McIntyre, Conrad White, Mark Hodgkinson and Jordan McAuliffe.
