Event organisers of the Skerries 100, Loughshinny Motorcycle Club, have recently confirmed that this years meeting will have an additional Superbike race, as a tribute to legendary road racer, Martin Finnegan.
With it been ten years since the multi Irish Superbike champion’s untimely passing, fans and former sponsors of the racer known for his unique spectacular style have decided that a Superbike encounter at Skerries, named in honour of him, is an ideal tribute to one of the Republic of Ireland’s greatest ever road racers.
Speaking via Loughshinny Motorcycle Club’s Facebook page, about this topic, long time sponsor of ‘Finbar’ Tony Carton stated:
“On the occasion this year of Martin’s tenth anniversary we felt it appropriate to honour and remember him in some worthwhile way. We decided that a race in his memory at Skerries this year would be a fitting gesture.
A superbike race with attractive prize money would entice a number of €10-€15K Euro’s and in this regard we are asking former sponsors, supporters and friends of martin to contribute towards this fund.
We have the support of the Finnegan extended family and the Loughshinny Club and we hope to make it an exceptional event in his memory, for all the enjoyment he gave us, albeit far to short.
We know a vast number of fans of Martin would like him remembered, and hopefully we can rely on your generosity. Not that he would ever be forgotten, but rather remembered as one of the greats of Irish Motorcycling.
Thank you in anticipation.”
