Finding the best locations to spectate from at Oliver’s Mount, requires good knowledge of England’s only closed roads venue.
You’ve got to know the little shortcuts, walking down that hill, walking this way, that way, go over the bridge.
It can be at times, a bit like a crystal maze adventure. Once you’ve found that ideal spectating spot though, you quickly realise wow this is unique, different.
Oliver’s Mount is incomparable in its’ own right, no other race circuit in England, is closed roads based.
History, great moments define North Yorkshire’s jewel in the crown and last weekend Dean Harrison ensured that the first Cock O’The North since 2017, would not be forgot in a hurry.
Now the third most successful Scarborough exponent of all time, Harrison was in pretty much unbeatable form aboard the TT podium finishing, Boyce Precision Engineering/Russell Racing Yamaha, Keay Racing Ducati.
Watching trackside at Drury’s Hairpin, what I noticed most was Harrison’s pin point accuracy.
You couldn’t really tell what he was mastering differently in comparison to the rest.
I guess that is what makes the crème de la crème so good, they make it look easy, when in reality it is anything but, 100 plus aspects are aligning.
Alongside Harrison, others to star on Saturday and Sunday included Tobermore’s Adam McLean, new Super Twins lap record holder Rob Hodson, Gary McCoy, Michael Browne, the Ramsdens Steve & Matty and top newcomer Marcus ‘Spartacus’ Simpson.
New wave IOM roads talent Simpson, performances did not surprise astute road racing aficionados, already aware of his pedigree as showcased via sterling Irish roads displays last year.
Due to make his Manx Grand Prix debut in August, he’s a definite one to watch.
Back to the topic of crystal mazes, well for yours truly it felt like this, after stumbling over and instantly I thought uh oh.
None the less we plodded on, hope those keeping an eye on the live updates enjoyed it, apologies again for auto text!
Barry Sheene Classic next at Scarborough, minus three weeks!
