Top Five Roads Teams Of 2018: No.1 – Smiths Racing

Road Racing News leading roads teams of the 2018 pure road racing season is, drum roll, Senior TT victors Smiths Racing.

You can’t but not impressed with Smiths Racing’s application, drive to win, professionalism. The family run team who first ventured into the roads scene in 2014 at the North West 200, has in recent times established itself as for many International Road Racing’s leading outfit.

Joining forces again with Peter Hickman, it’s been a quite prodigious year of roads competition for the BMW Motorrad backed team.

Superstock race 1 victors at the Vauxhall International North West 200, TT 2018 saw the affable Smiths team enjoy a quite incredible two weeks of Mountain Course action.

Having shown accomplished, rapid pace during practice week, expectations were high for team rider Hickman going into race week.

After a non finish in the RST Superbike race, a gritty third place finish in the opening Monster Energy Supersport encounter marked the start of a formidable run of results.

Making up for an early race error, the laid back, calm, cool Hickman would go onto secure a first TT triumph in an enthralling Royal London 360 Quantum Superstock race, along the way setting a blistering new class lap record of 134.403 mph.

Banking a third successive rostrum finish, the second Monster Energy Supersport encounter saw Hickman excel and some again on the Smiths prepared Trooper backed 675 Triumph.

Race week would conclude in quite incredible fashion as he secured in record breaking style, the Pokerstars Senior TT crown.

Race record, lap record, the first ever 135 mph lap, you name it, it was achieved. You could sense in the winners enclosure how much it meant to both rider and team, accomplishing goals that mere mortals can only dream of.

Following their momentous exploits on the Isle of Man, attentions roads wise for Smiths and Hickman turned to the hugely popular MCE Insurance Ulster Grand Prix.

Although the inclement weather provided problems a plenty for organisers, competitors, the race action on the ultra speedy Dundrod course, was nothing short of top draw.

Excelling again at Dundrod, world’s fastest road racer Hickman enjoyed another strong Ulster GP campaign, finishing Superstock race runner up plus banking two victories, including claiming for the first time, the feature Superbike race crown.

In total this season at the premier International roads events, five times race winners, nine times podium finishers, and now established Mountain Course greats, Smiths Racing who provided Macau GP bound Hickman with immaculate Triumph, BMW machinery, are more than worthy winners of Road Racing News, team of the year award.
