Suncity Group Macau Grand Prix – Irwin Seals Provisional Pole

Backing up his good form from early morning practice, Be Wiser Ducati’s Glenn Irwin bagged provisional pole position for the 51st Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix, following a captivating opening qualifying session.

Lapping at 2 minutes 24.310 seconds on his 15th and final qualifying lap of the session, he was over 1.45 seconds quicker than Macau legend Michael Rutter (2.25.777) who again lead the challenge to the ultra confident Carrickfergus racer.

Reigning Macau GP champion Peter Hickman (2.26.262) competing this week in the Bathams SMT colours looked in good fettle, showing metronomic consistent pace.

Conor Cummins (2.27.460) was next up on the time sheets just in front of regular race winning contender Martin Jessopp (2.27.631) who in turn was only 0.327 clear of Cookstown BE Racing’s Derek Sheils.

Seventh quickest Horst Saiger headed the Kawasaki challenge in front of Lee Hardy Racing’s Gary Johnson, whilst places eighth and tenth within Q1 were secured respectively by Four Angels BMW’s David Johnson and Frohburg lap record holder Danny Webb.

In total 14 riders within the afternoons action on the Guia Circuit lapped under 2 minutes 31 seconds, a sign of the already high standard being set by the truly world class 28 rider entry.

Penz 13 BMW’s Alex Polita again lead the newcomers brigade, finishing a very creditable 20th fastest in front of world’s fastest road racer Dean Harrison plus experienced event specialists AJ Venter, Steve Heneghan, Davy Morgan and Bimota’s Ben Wylie.
