Southern 100 – Solo Championship Race Report

The 2013 Southern 100 solo championship began in perfect conditions all round the Billown road race circuit. Michael Dunlop made a terrific start on the Honda TT legends racing superbike to lead by over a second at the end of lap 1 from Dean Harrison on the RC Express racing Kawasaki by MSS performance superbike and Guy Martin on the Tyco Suzuki by TAS superbike.

Jamie Hamilton, Ian Lougher and Michael Pearson where all in close attendance at the end of lap 1 occupying 4th, 5th and 6th positions. Lap 2 saw Dunlop continue to lead out from Harrison and Martin who where close together in second and third whilst Jamie Hamilton maintained fourth place on the KMR Kawasaki powered by Vauxhall superstock bike.

By the end of lap 2 Dunlop lead Harrison and Martin by 1.2 seconds whilst Jamie Hamilton continued to hold fourth place in front of Ian Lougher and Russ Mountford now into the top 6 in the race. On lap 3 Guy Martin moved into second place in front of Dean Harrison as Michael Dunlop still lead on the Honda TT legends racing superbike.

As lap 3 finished positions remained unchanged at the front of the race, James Cowton lead the 600 class part of the race on the CC engineering backed CBR 600 Honda supersport bike. Michael Dunlop and Guy Martin where now locked in a great battle for the race lead as lap 4 of this years Southern 100 solo championship race brought with it close and exciting racing.

Dean Harrison was still in third place riding consistently and showing good speed as he went in pursuit of Michael Dunlop and Guy Martin for the lead of the race. By lap 5 of the race Martin was now reeling Dunlop in, plus on lap 5 Guy Martin broke the outright lap record at the Southern 100 setting a lap speed of 114.2 mph on the Tyco Suzuki by TAS superbike.

Michael Dunlop still lead at the end of lap 5 but by only a tenth of a second from Guy Martin, Dean Harrison stayed in third place in front of fourth placed Jamie Hamilton whilst Ian Lougher and Russ Mountford completed the top six. Lap 6 began with Michael Dunlop holding a slim advantage over Guy Martin but halfway through lap 6 Guy Martin hit the front for the first time.

Guy crossed the line at the end of lap 6 to lead by 0.2 of a second from Michael Dunlop as Dean Harrison, Jamie Hamilton, Ian Lougher, Russ Mountford, James Cowton, Paul Shoesmith, Ty Jones and Tim Poole rounded out the top 10.

As the sun shone down on the Southern 100 circuit the pace at the front was equally as hot as Guy Martin and Michael Dunlop jostled for the lead of this years Southern 100 solo championship race. Guy Martin continued to lead and now by an increased advantage of 0.4 of a second over Michael Dunlop in second place as lap 7 came to a close. Dean Harrison remained in third place, Jamie Hamilton and Ian Lougher both held fourth and fifth positions as the race entered its final lap.

So here we went on the final lap of this years Southern 100 solo championship and Guy Martin was in determined mood looking to win his second solo championship title at the Southern 100 having previously won the title back in 2009. Michael Dunlop gave it everything on lap 8 of the race indeed by cross four ways Guy and Michael where pretty level with each other.

But in the end Guy Martin crossed the line at the end of lap 8 to record a popular Southern 100 solo championship triumph on the Tyco Suzuki by TAS superbike. Michael Dunlop finished in second place on the Honda TT legends racing superbike, Michael’s final lap was a lap speed of 113.9 mph. Dean Harrison recorded a superb third place finish on the RC Express racing Kawasaki by MSS performance superbike, Jamie Hamilton, Ian Lougher, Russ Mountford, James Cowton, Paul Shoesmith, Ty Jones and Tim Poole completed the top 10.

Leading newcomer in the race was Andy Soar who finished in a good 12th place. James Cowton was victorious in the 600 class part of the Southern 100 solo championship race on the CC engineering backed CBR 600 Honda supersport bike. Tim Poole was the second 600 rider home on the AIR Kawasaki ZX6 supersport bike.
