Southern 100: Preview – Part 3 – Sidecar Races

Three wheel action of the very highest quality is firmly on the horizon for next week’s Southern 100, as many of the world’s best Sidecar teams battle it out for victories, on the famous Colas Billown course.

Amongst those hoping to taste the winners champagne include lap record holders John Holden/Lee Cain.

Since joining forces in 2017, the crew have gone onto record six successive second place finishes at the TT Races, plus have also as illustrated by their lap record breaking feat from 12 months ago, been more than a touch on the pace at Billown.

Unquestionably capable of going unbeaten at this year’s Southern 100, like the Silicone Barnes Racing duo you can apply the same notion to Berlin Express supported Tim Reeves/Mark Wilkes.

Three wheeling S100 champions in 2018, the formidable duo are quietly confident of chalking up next week multiple race wins.

Others extremely capable of mounting rostrum finishing challenges include Alan Founds/Jake Lowther, Pete Founds/Jevan Walmsley, Lee Crawford/Scott Hardie and former TT winners Conrad Harrison/Andy Winkle.

Further depth to the entry is provided by Steve Ramsden/Matty Ramsden, Wayne Lockey/Mark Sayers, Darren Hope/Lenny Bumfrey, Greg Lambert/Ben Cole, Paul Riley/Jason O’Connor, Dave Quirk/Karl Schofield.

Plus Optimark Road Racing’s Estelle Leblond/Frank Claeys, John Lowther/Nigel Lowther and prominent solo competitor, 2009 Senior Manx GP winner Michael ‘Jack’ Russell who’s maiden Sidecar road racing voyage sees him team up with Tom Bryant.

Newcomers wise, lots of attention will be placed upon rising local stars Ryan Crowe/Callum Crowe. Son’s of TT great Nick Crowe, their maiden TT Races tenure last month, saw them become the fastest Sidecar TT newcomers in history.

Tipped to contend in the near future for TT victories, it’s going to be intriguing to see how quickly they adapt to the fast, flowing, technical, raw roads course that is Billown.

A perennial favourite with fans of the Southern 100, Sidecar competition at Billown in recent years has gone from strength to strength.

Whilst TT lap record holders the Birchall’s Ben & Tom may not be competing, it takes nothing away from what is one of the most high quality entries of modern times, illustrating the popularity of three wheeling competition on the Colas Billown course.
