Road Racer’s Adventures: NZ Superbikes, Hampton Downs

First opened in 2009, North Waikato based Hampton Downs hosted the latest rounds of the 2023 New Zealand Superbike Championship.

As at prior rounds at Mike Pero Motorsport-Park, Teretonga Park, Cemetery Circuit Races lap record holder Mitch Rees starred.

Prior to concluding a hat-trick of Superbike successes, the opening big bike encounter would see the Whakatane rider embroiled in a titanic tussle with Alastair Hoogenboezem.

Across the finish line as the twelfth and final lap ended, just 0.136 separated the duelling duo.

Fresh from prodigious Bluff Hill Climb, Honda Invercargill Street Races ventures, Tony Rees wrapped up the rostrum finishers.

The NZ street racing veteran would go onto acquire another podium finish, fourth place finish from the remaining 1000cc races.

Added competitors with varying degrees of street racing experience, circulating over recent times around Hampton Downs included:

Supersport front-runner Rogan Chandler, Jordan Burley, Scott Moir, ex Wilson Craig Racing/McKinstry Racing team-member Daniel Mettam.

Luca Durning, David Hall and three wheeling aces Adam Unsworth/Bryce Rose, Barry Smith/Stu Dawe, Tracey Bryan/Jo Mickleson.
