2024 New Zealand Street racing kick started for the first time this year, as the Burt Munro Challenge incorporated Star Insurance NZ Hill Climb Championships took title billing.
Located in Bluff, the annual hill-climb, as I’ve stated previously, has a real road racing vibe about it, given the smooth, flowing roads, specific riding style required to be competitive.
Post the ending of today’s timed stints, overall, fastest for the second successive year was NZ street racing icon, Tony Rees.
Astride the Rees Racing Honda, he banked a formidable, best lap-time of 44.091 seconds, which was almost one second quicker than leading 601cc to Open class pursuer, Heath Botica.
Up to 600cc machines pace setter Mark Hodgkinson finished third best overall whilst in total nine racers unlocked sub 50 seconds lap-times.
Those not mentioned yet, who pocketed this feat, are as follows:
Daryl Craigie, 560 plate carrier Damien Koppe, Conrad White, Phil Main, Kane Bray and Post Classic Pre 82 category conqueror, Chris McMeeken.
