When studying the results of our online poll, to determine what the public considers the top road race of 2021, there is a clear winner, which is the inaugural Baja International Tourist Cup.
The meet organised by Baja Tarmac Racing Promotions received 71 percent of the vote, over sixty percent more than the five other Race of The Year candidates.
A ground breaking event for pure road racing worldwide, the Mexican Tourist Cup located in Tecate, Baja California provided unique challenges for competitors including overall race winner, TT Races stalwart Eric Wilson.
Back in late October, I compiled the following report on the Obsession Engineering supported racer’s memorable triumph:
Yesterday’s sole four lap encounter at the newest International road race worldwide, saw 16 times top forty TT finisher Wilson surge to victory, ending with a finale race finishing time of 20 minutes 20 seconds, on route setting a speediest lap time of 5 minutes 1 second.
Nearest pursuers to racing adventurer, experienced Mountain Course pilot Wilson were California’s Dave Thomas, Samuel Gluss and former solo, Sidecar TT competitor Wade Boyd.
History defines real road racing, motorsport started on public roads in the 1890’s!
The first ever Baja International Tourist Cup is the latest landmark for a sport unlike any other.
In years to come I have no doubt that this event, the brainchild of Pedro A.Vargas Valdez will elevate in stature and potentially attract more esteemed pure road racers like the aforementioned Wilson & Boyd.
