Oliver’s Mount Top 8: Rad Hughes

Oliver’s Mount Top 8: Rad Hughes

Another accomplished, high level exponent of North Yorkshire’s ‘Mini TT’, the RAF’s Rad Hughes is the next racer to take part in Road Racing News growing in popularity, Oliver’s Mount Top 8 series.

Q1: First memory of Oliver’s Mount?

“Going to watch in about 1996 on back of a mates GSXR 750 Suzuki. Drinking way too much beer in Scarborough. Not having a tent only a sleeping bag for the weekend and watching some great racing.”

Q2: Favourite part about racing at the mount?

“It’s not a purpose built track and it’s narrow with the fans being close to the racing.”

Q3: Favourite section of Scarborough course?

“Not really got a favourite section. The whole track is good. I used to love going round the outside of people at the left hand kink heading up Sheenes rise, until I fired myself over the top of the bike into the banking.

My shoulder was still bleeding the following weekend for my wedding day. Unfortunately I’m not the quickest at hairpins so my lap times ain’t the best at Scarborough.”

Q4: Best moment thus far at Scarborough?

“Lightweight race (from 2016 I think) dicing with James Cowton on a Moto 3 bike with me on my ZXR 400 Kawasaki.

Generally messing about in the race, few hand gestures as we over took each other. Then coming into find James had taken the lap record.”

Q5: All time Scarborough racing hero?

“I’ve not really got any racing heroes. All the top riders are heroes for their commitment and ability.

Q6: Is there one machine in particular that you would like to race at Scarborough?

“One of the top Supersport 600’s. Just to see how they compare to the relatively stock 600’s I have raced.

Still want to race a RS 250 Honda/TZ 250 Yamaha but Scarborough wouldn’t be my choice of circuit for a 250.”

Q7: One word to describe Oliver’s Mount?

“Addictive”

Q8: Most respected racing rival at Scarborough?

“Respect everyone in the paddock but must say I hugely respect the ones, who are more struggling to make it happen.

Got to have respect for Tom Robinson, seen him fall off his CBR 600 Honda a couple of times with a dodgy gearbox on the Saturday.

To then strip his road bike ZX6R Kawasaki and scrounge round the paddock for track fairings, so he can race it on the Sunday. Did his fastest lap on the Sunday on a road bike running road gearing.”
