North West 200: Hickman Powers To Superstock Pole

Lapping just a shade under the existing Superbike qualifying lap record, Smiths Racing’s Peter Hickman dazzled on route to securing Superstock pole position at the 90th anniversary North West 200.

Looking at one with the Smiths BMW, Hickman with a lap time of 4 minutes 23.604 seconds, finished just over 1.6 seconds quicker than nearest challenger Glenn Irwin (4.25.244).

Joining Irwin on the front row for tonight’s opening Superstock encounter, will be Quattro Plant Wicked Coatings Kawasaki team mate James Hillier (4.25.830), who looks in a very good frame of mind ahead of this evening’s race action.

18 times TT winner Michael Dunlop (4.26.762) was again in all out action mode, on route to finishing fourth quickest, whilst Ashcourt Racing’s Lee Johnston (4.27.124), Silicone Engineering Racing’s Dean Harrison (4.27.826) respectively overall fifth, sixth fastest, both showed an accomplished turn of pace.

The evergreen Michael Rutter (4.28.194) took spot number seven on the time sheets, whilst lead NW200 newcomer, Buildbase Suzuki’s Richard Cooper placed overall eighth quickest, courtesy of his lap time from Tuesday’s timed practice session.

Finalising the ten fastest overall qualifiers were Honda Racing’s Ian Hutchinson (4.30.755), and fellow multi TT winner Gary Johnson (4.30.944).

We must mention in this article as well, that the second Superstock qualifying session, was red flagged with just over four minutes of the session to still run, following an incident involving Immingham’s Craig Neve.

The former factory CF Moto racer, didn’t sustain any injuries following the incident at Magherabuoy Chicane, but red flags were still waived, due to recticel bales venturing onto the Triangle course.
