Cain Road Race: Rees Finishes Top 600cc Pilot

Cain Road Race: Rees Finishes Top 600cc Pilot

Despite only having a few days to learn the ultra-long, compelling, other worldly 74 kilometres long Cain Road Race course, Matt Rees ended his first Mexican racing trip in fine style, by finishing best 600cc exponent.

Racing a ZX6R Kawasaki, provided by Hector Quintanilla’s Sherwin Williams team, Rees set a race time of just under 43 minutes, (42 minutes 58.545 seconds).

This proved enough for the affable Welshman to finish best 600cc pilot.

Sherwin Williams team-mate for the meeting, twice TT winner Gary Johnson, finished overall eight places ahead.

Ten places in front of Brigg’s Johnson was outright winner, new Cain Road Race Champion Gonzalo Castro Gutierrez.

Castro Gutierrez race time, stood just under 39 minutes, 38 minutes 51.283 seconds.

The Cain Road Race is night and day different compared to road races in the UK, the Isle of Man and Europe.

The event’s length, road surface, challenges that it brings have a vibe of Dakar Rally, Targa Florio, Mille Miglia about it. It’s not just competing it’s about finishing the race.

You could tell how much it meant to established Mountain Course racers, the aforementioned Johnson and Rees, finishing their first Mexican pure road race.

Their presence during the past week in Mexico, has no question added further exposure, publicity to one of pure road racing’s youngest races.
