Barry Sheene Classic: Day One Wrap Up

Barry Sheene Classic: Day One Wrap Up
Nothing could dampen the enthusiastic mindset of those attending trackside throughout the morning, afternoon at Oliver’s Mount, watching real road racing close up, even the good old British summertime weather couldn’t!

Racing wise on day one of the first Barry Sheene Classic since 2020, two competitors in particular took on starring roles, Mad Bros Racing’s Gary McCoy and 2019 Steve Henshaw Gold Cup runner-up Mike Norbury.

McCoy sped in dominant fashion to successive Super Twin victories plus emerged on top from a keenly contested Supersport race opener.

The second six-lap RST Supersport encounter, would prove arguably top race of the day with McCoy and Norbury closely matched throughout.

As the sixth, final lap dawned it seemed that victory success No.4 was beckoning for rapidly improving Scarborough exponent McCoy.

ZX6R Kawasaki mounted Norbury though had other ideas and in dramatic fashion took the victory spoils.

The Manchester racer also took Classic Superbike race victories x2, following prodigious maiden racing outings astride the Team Talk of The Town/York Suzuki by Motul Oils steed.

Kelly Carruthers, Don Gilbert shared the Modern Lightweight race triumphs, Tony Flinton secured a brace of Classic Two Stroke victories whilst Angela Cragg and John Cliffe attained respective Classic Four Stroke successes.

In terms of the three-wheeling fraternity, true Sidecar royalty triumphed, 17 times TT winner Dave Molyneux.

Joined by Scarborough newcomer Justin Sharp in the 890cc KTM powered outfit, ‘Moly’ elevated his Oliver’s Mount race wins total to 22 after seeing off determined challenges from Carl Fenwick/Ashley Moore.

The rain may have tried to stop the fun factor today but it didn’t subside and the day’s racing was enjoyed by many a famous guest including Steve Wheatman, Steve Parrish, twice TT winner Trevor Nation and 1998 Formula 1 & Senior TT winner Ian Simpson.
