Armoy: Preview Time

Armoy: Preview Time
Set for it’s fifteenth edition, the Armoy Road Races continues to expand its stature in real road racing circles.

Countless pre-event chat has revolved around Michael Dunlop’s decision not to compete.

Post Southern 100 Solo Championship competition, the TT wins record-holder firmly stated he won’t be returning to Armoy to defend the ‘Race of Legends’ title, he won for an unprecedented tenth time last year.

Moving forward from this matter, the AMRRC (Armoy Motorcycle Road Racing Club) has got together an accomplished, excellent entry, exceeding 125 racers!

Superstock, Senior TT winner, Solo Championship winner at Billown, National Superstock 1000 Championship leader, three Northwest 200 wins, it’s already been a stunning season for Milwaukee BMW’s Davey Todd.

Race of Legends winner in 2022, the outright event lap-record holder is certain to take some beating.

In addition to TAS Racing prepared M1000RR BMW machinery, ‘DT’ also has Powertoolmate Ducati exotica (Twin cylinder V2 Panigale) at his disposal for Hilton Car Sales, A&P Louden/John M Paterson Ltd Supersport race contests.

Former Padgetts Racing team-mate Conor Cummins whilst eleven years away from Armoy, can’t be not considered a front running threat.

Arriving with the mighty FHO Racing BMW team, the 12 times TT podium finisher taking on a fresh new challenge, stated about his Irish national road racing return:

“I’ve raced at Armoy on two previous occasions and the roads are quite gnarly but it’s perfect if you like pure road racing. Armoy has it all; the jumps and the technical turns and you always must be thinking on your feet – it’s a course, I would say, that plenty of road racers just love.

I’ve been thinking about returning to Armoy for a few years now, and it’s always been in the back of my mind, but it has never worked out until now as my circumstances have changed.

The offer to ride for FHO Racing BMW Motorrad came along at the right time, and I’m delighted about that and even more excited about coming back to Armoy and racing.

FHO Racing BMW Motorrad has been brilliant as has the Club in accepting my late entry. When I meet the Club members at various races, they are always very supportive of every road racer, particularly the up-and-coming riders.”

Outside Cummins, Todd, others eyeing up elite results include Cookstown Grand Final conqueror Dominic Herbertson (Burrows Engineering Racing/Richardson Kelly Racing), Skerries Sprint winner Michael Sweeney, three times TT Privateers Champion Jamie Coward (KTS Racing Powered by Steadplan).

Derek Sheils (Roadhouse Macau BMW/McAdoo Racing), Paul Jordan (Jackson Racing/KMR Kawasaki), IN Competition Aprilia/Russell Racing’s Michael Browne.

Others ready to race include Sam West, Phil Crowe, James Chawke, Neil Kernohan (Kernohan Racing), Barry Furber, Cowton Racing’s Gareth Arnold.

Liam Chawke, Jacque Foley, Keelim Ryan (Trison McMullan Racing), the Isle of Wight’s No.1 roads scene pilot Ryan Whitehall.

Yesteryear class experts Barry Davidson, Richard Ford, Wattie Brown, Nigel Moore, Dave Bell.

Plus, Armoy newbies, Dafabet Racing’s Matt Stevenson, Parker Transport Racing’s Josh Corner, new WH Racing signing, Michael Evans.

Oliver’s Mount Racing Director Andy Hayes, Bailey Harker, Aaron Spence (Spence Engineering), Czechia’s Maxim Zanaska and Aberdare Park alumni, TH Racing’s Jay Bellers Smith.

Reflecting on the 2024 Armoy fields for the scheduled thirteen races, two on Friday (26th July), eleven on Saturday (27th July), AMRRC Chairman William Munnis stated:

“This year we’ve a great turn out of top road racers. The Club and I have a job to do ensuring that we put on the best race we can, not just for those riders but for the fans and the sponsors. Given the quality of the line up, I’m sure there will be some very tight races.

This the Club’s fifteenth year of putting on the Armoy Road Races. We’ve been running races since 2009; having set up the Club in 2007 and other than 2020, the Armoy Road Races have been running each year.

It’s an immense effort and given that the Club is made up of volunteers – all who give their time freely – it’s nothing short of miraculous that there continues to be the passion and true spirit in everything we do to ensure that this sport not only endures but thrives.”
