72nd Gold Cup: Day One Wrap Up

72nd Gold Cup: Day One Wrap Up

One aspect you can’t accurately predict in relation to racing at Oliver’s Mount, is the good old British weather.

Once again, the weather gods threw spanners in the works this morning, as rain showers, drizzle, mist arrived.

In spite, of this, the mixed conditions throughout today, unfortunate delays, the bumper crowd at Scarborough was still treated to proper, undistilled real road racing.

SMT Racing’s Rob Hodson kick started his newest Gold Cup tenure, in truly prosperous fashion, waltzing to opening JMS Group Super Twins, second BDS Motorcycles Supersport (A) race successes.

The Supersport (A) race opener, held over eight laps saw Hodson finish second behind Gary McCoy with Tom Weeden third. Under 0.7 of a second covered the top three after a dynamic tussle for middleweight class honours. You only had to listen to commentators Tony Coupland, Brad Hix to grasp the richness of the entertainment.

Whippet Racing’s Stuart Hall obtained overall, two-stroke 250 race one spoils with Sidecar TT giant Dan Sayle, Newcomers Manx GP winner Andy Jackson second, third respectively.

CB 500 success was mopped up by Grant Whitaker, taking full advantage of early race leader Bailey Harker tipping off (unscathed) on lap two.

Nick Anderson on his Scarborough racing return, Tony Flinton shared the 400cc four-stroke, 125/Moto 3 race titles.

Oliver’s Mount debutant, STS Racing’s Keelim Ryan, Craig Szczypek captured the Supersport (B), 243 Road Racing Association Support race openers.

Trimmed to just four-laps, the first of three Road Racing Ireland Classic Superbike races, proved tumultuous for Greenall Racing’s Derek Sheils, gaining his first win at Scarborough since 2022, circuit triumph number six.

Previously showcased, Supersport (A) race one winner McCoy finished second with 2016 Senior Manx GP Champion Weeden a battling third. Sam Johnson finished no.1 Supermono exponent ahead of Jack Turner and Dave Walsh.

Dominant in qualifying, Lee Crawford/Scott Hardie’s Yorkshire MAG Sidecar race one endeavours came to a dramatic halt at the Esses, with the Anglo/Scottish pair going onto the grass, then crashing into the recticel.

Driver Crawford was ok from the incident, we wish his formidable fellow crew member, Hardie a very swift and speedy recovery.

Following the incident, a delay ensued before competition re-started over four-laps.

The Ramsden’s Steve & Matty would finish P1 ahead of Carl Fenwick/Phil Knapton, with a shade under three seconds separating the top two.

Michael ‘Jack’ Russell/Jake Roberts bested circuit newcomers Bob Dawson/Matty Sims for fourth as James Saunders/Sarah Stokoe, Bruce Moore/Mark Gash, Greg Lambert/Andy Javons rounded out the race finishers.
