Four times a race victor in Europe’s premier roads series, his favourite recollection from his time sampling IRRC (International Road Racing Championship) events to date, is as follows:
“For me there are many beautiful memories of racing in the IRRC for over 10 years.
If I would have to mention one race it would be the second IRRC Superbike race at Hengelo in 2015.
It was the first race of the season and the weather forecast for this weekend showed clear skies and sunny weather.
Of course, you always have a set of wheels with rain tires, but we didn’t pay much attention about it given the weather predictions.
So, we had older/used rain tires on those wheels, one Michelin front tire that was 5 years old and one Pirelli rear tire.”
Johan continued:
“Before the second race it started to shower so the start was delayed, and we had to change the wheels.
At first, I had some worries because of the status of the tires but during the warmup lap, I directly felt that they were still doing fine.
I managed to take the hole-shot and win the race by 10 seconds. After the race it was rumoured that my (Michelin) front tire was a new prototype Pirelli tire because of the pace I was able to have in the soaking wet.”
