68th Scarborough Gold Cup: Johnston Opens Gold Cup Wins Account After Entertaining Supersport Encounter

Ashcourt Racing’s Lee Johnston opened his Gold Cup wins account after finishing on top in an entertaining opening Supersport A race.

4th on the grid for the eight lap encounter, at the end of lap 1 the eight times International Road Race winner held third position, trailing respected Oliver’s Mount, Scarborough specialist David ‘Action’ Jackson by just over 0.8 of a second.

Overhauling Spada supported Mike Norbury on lap three, lap four saw ‘The General’ hit the front, moving nigh on 2.5 seconds clear of the chasing pack.

From here there was no stopping the happy go lucky, hugely popular competitor who went onto emerge victorious by the modest margin of 1.612 seconds.

CBR 600RR Honda mounted Norbury placed an excellent second, whilst third place went to new ‘Tommy Club’ member, VRS Racing’s Brad Vicars.

Senior Manx GP runner-up Stephen Parsons finished a more than creditable fourth whilst fifth place was acquired by early pace setter David Jackson.

Joe Akroyd competing for the second time at Scarborough, edged out 12 times race winner at North Yorkshire’s ‘Mini TT’ Joe Thompson, to round out the first six finishers.

Positions 8th-10th were clinched respectively by Brian Greenfield on his 19 year old Kawasaki steed, KY-JAX Racing’s Ben Shuttlewood and welcome returnee to Scarborough, 2014 TT Privateers Championship runner-up Russ Mountford.

Others to claim solid finishes included Barry Furber (12th), FR Racing’s Sam Johnson (13th), Stephen Degnan (15th) and local favourite Paul Marley (16th).
