First opened in 1996, replacing the legendary old street-circuit (used from 1927 to 1990) the Hohenstein-Ernstthal (hometown of German road racer Nico Muller) located Sachsenring circuit (3.671 metres – 2.281 miles long track) hosted during the past week the ‘Euro Moto’ Championship (new name for former IDM – Internationale Deutsche Motorradmeisterschaft series) season opener.
Well-known names to roads scene aficionados competing included:
Multiple IRRC Superbike races podium finisher Freddie Heinrich (show-cased in feature article image from 2025 Frohburger Dreieck competition), Hengelo-Varsselring Super Twins lap-record holder Sasha De Vits and Marvin Siebdrath, IRRC Schleizer Dreieck Supersport race winner x2 last year.
2024 IRRC SBK Champion David ‘Datziii’ Datzer, before his first TT Races expedition with Brian McCormack’s Roadhouse Macau Team, was also in attendance, but not racing, instead in the role of mechanic for Ben Kugler (IRRC 2024 SSP Schleizer Dreieck wildcard rider).
The next Euro Moto rounds are in the Czech Republic, first at Brno Circuit (29th-31st May) and Autodrom Most (26th-28th June), coinciding with the Tandragee 100 and Dolny Hricov-Zilina Airport races.
These Czech ‘Euro Moto’ events will-be-supported by Pro Superstock 1000, Twin Cup classes (both categories did not feature at the Sachsenring).
Provisional start-lists include roads experienced pilots, such-as; Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix podium finisher Sheridan Morais, Ouri Bikkems, Jan Buchel, Julius Ilmberger Jr, Udo Reichmann, Jef Van Calster and Thijs Peeters.
